Claude Cowork Expands to Mobile, Web: AI Agents Now Work While You're Away

Anthropic has expanded its Claude Cowork feature to mobile and web platforms, ending the tool’s desktop-only limitation and allowing AI-delegated tasks to run continuously across devices. The rollout began July 7, 2026, starting with Max subscription users, with broader plan access expected in the coming weeks.

Cowork represents a shift in how Claude operates. Rather than answering isolated questions, users assign it multi-step jobs, such as reconciling spreadsheets, building client decks from transcripts, and converting contract folders into renewal trackers, and Claude works across connected files, calendars, email, and messaging apps until completion.

According to Anthropic’s usage data, over 90% of Cowork activity is unrelated to software development. Business operations and content creation account for roughly half of all sessions, positioning the tool squarely in what the company calls “the work around the work”: administrative and operational tasks that consume significant time but rarely appear in job descriptions.

Previously, Cowork sessions were tied to a single laptop session. Closing the device paused the task, creating friction for professionals who needed work to continue between meetings or overnight. The mobile and web expansion addresses this directly through three changes:

Session continuity: Users can start a task on desktop, monitor progress on mobile, and retrieve finished output from any connected device.
Offline background execution: Scheduled tasks now run without requiring an active device connection, enabling completion of overnight or early-morning jobs.
Human-in-the-loop checkpoints: When Claude reaches a decision point that requires judgment, it pauses and sends a query directly to the user’s phone, retaining approval authority with the human operator.

Anthropic emphasizes that outputs still require explicit review before anything is finalized or sent, a safeguard against autonomous errors reaching clients or stakeholders unchecked.

Desktop remains positioned as the “full” Cowork experience, retaining exclusive access to local files and browser-based automation that mobile and web versions currently lack. This tiered structure suggests Anthropic is treating desktop as the power-user environment while mobile and web serve as monitoring and lightweight-task interfaces.

Web: Cowork sessions launch from the claude.ai home screen.
Mobile: Available via the sidebar in the iOS and Android Claude apps.
Desktop: Requires the dedicated Claude desktop app for full functionality, including access to local files and the browser.

Anthropic has also unified the chat and Cowork interfaces on web and desktop, merging projects and artifacts into a single workspace. To incentivize adoption, the company is extending doubled Cowork usage limits through August 5, 2026.
